Tie-dye garments, especially tie-dye t-shirts, became very popular beginning in 1960s America. Calling themselves "hippies", the '60s generation protested the Viet Nam War, and rebelled against the established mores of society. Their brightly colored tie-dye clothes were varied and individual, contrasting strongly with the suit and tie "uniform" of the businessman, lawyer, and politician of the day. The 1960s hippies did not invent tie-dye, however. Tie-dying fabric is actually an ancient art, with various processes used in many different cultures as much as five thousand years ago. An internet search on the history of tie-dye provides a glimpse into the diversity of cultures that used tie-dye techniques over the centuries. The popularity of tie-dye, as we know it today, is due in large part to new dyes that were developed in the 1950s. These fiber reactive dyes did not require heat or strong chemicals, making it relatively easy for anyone to create their own tie-dye garments. By far the most popular fiber reactive dye is Procion, a formula that produces brilliant, permanent colors that don't fade. This is the dye used most often in the shirts and other tie-dye garments you see in retail stores. And it is the dye used on tie-dye t-shirts sold by Expertees. |
